Automating my own job search, and finding where automation stops working

I built an AI agent to run my job search end to end. Testing it showed me where AI helps and where a person has to stay in charge.

The goal

Hand a real, high-volume task to AI: find relevant openings, tailor my CV to each one, and send applications to hundreds of companies.

What happened

Full automation produced worse results. The agent couldn’t judge whether a role was a genuine fit, and it couldn’t make honest calls about gaps in my experience.

What I changed

I rebuilt the workflow with a human in the loop. AI handles the groundwork; I decide whether to apply, how to handle gaps, and the final wording. Nothing is sent without my check.

Find openings→ Draft & tailor→ Decide: fit, gaps, wording→ Approve & send

Outlined steps are handled by AI · filled steps are my decisions

The story in four chapters ↓

Murilo Lopes
I.

Lisboa. Born in Portugal. Leaving it young made me a student of cultures before I ever chose a degree.

II.

Bergen. Raised in Norway, fascinated by how differently people think, lead and trust across cultures. Studied HR, management & organisational psychology at BI — and got a first taste of recruitment, finding and introducing candidates to a subgroup of BI’s table tennis group.

III.

Daegu. An exchange semester at Keimyung University, South Korea — researching how European and Asian work cultures differ, and volunteering as an English teacher.

IV.

Cork. New country, new field — a year of data-quality work at Apple's European headquarters. Which brings us to the work —

Experience

The work

Tap a role to expand

  • Quality-checked over 1,000 data points daily across 10+ concurrent projects at 90% accuracy, turning errors into structured feedback engineers used to improve the models.
  • Trained sceptical colleagues on a new AI tool with hands-on guidance and follow-up, until they used it on their own.
  • Gave needs-based advice in a busy flagship store: active listening, difficult conversations and clear communication of terms and policy.
  • Ranked the store’s top seller four consecutive months, measured by sales per hour worked.
  • Worked with suppliers and colleagues to keep product information correct across systems.
  • Built from scratch as a single HTML file, including the 3D scene, with no prior web development experience.

Still growing

Early in the path, and honest about it.

I have one year of professional experience, and I'm not pretending otherwise. The direction is clear: work where people, process and data meet — where my degree and my year at Apple both point.
